What People Say About Me

"Lewis was a very helpful member of the production team for the interactive films we produced for the Step Up campaign on behalf of the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside and the University of Hull. He helped Eski in pre-production through advising on details of the script and locations, and then on the shoot he looked after the sound and even stepped in as an extra and actor with some of the scenarios. Most impressive was his confidence and rapport with cast and crew which was a factor in it being an enjoyable and successful shoot. I’m happy to recommend Lewis as part of a team and certainly has a great career in film or media ahead of him."

- J. Gilbert, Managing Director of Eski Media (Eskimo Soup), Hull

"Whilst working with Lewis on a short term contract, he provided a high level of technical support.

This included the pre and post production of videos, photography and setting up and supporting a number of live streamed events."

V. Richardson, Marketing Supervisor at Wyke College, Hull

"Lewis' attitude to work is infectious. Seeing how he juggles endless projects at a time and understanding his philosophy of always staying "ahead of the line" is a great and simple way of keeping yourself focused and prepared to hit deadlines a lot earlier than their actual dates. When you think you're on top of things, Lewis is on top and above, he is the "line" you should aspire to stay ahead of."

T. Balodis, Sports Business Person, Lincoln

"Lewis is creative, dedicated and committed in everything he does and delivers with professionalism. I would strongly recommend him to any employment role as I believe he is capable in achieving anything he puts his mind to."

R. Sharpe, General Manager at The Avenue Pub, Hull

"I don't think I ever truly appreciated the belief you had in me with the Exhibition project. It made me feel so wanted and happy in a low time, I can't thank you enough! Also, I'm really proud of how far you have come with your music, keep up the creative flow! A true inspiration."

Chapter 1. Expressing the Power of My Wild Imagination

I am 24 years old and have a major passion for the creative industry, specifically film and music production.

My home town Hull has always been pretty bleak for creative opportunity. Although there are many great attrations here including our infamous Humber Bridge, only submarium in the world The Deep and extensive history in the fishing industry, there has never really been a great deal to explore here in the city and outskirts. There are also next to no opportunities for young people to explore their imagination because of lack of artistic facilities. Due to this, since a yound age, I have had to rely on the power of my imagination to create my own entertainment.

Since I was around three years old, I would watch at least four different films a day. From original Disney cartoons and late 90's Warner Bros and Universal productions including the likes of The Mask (Chuck Russel 1994), Stuart Little (Rob Minkoff, 1999)  and Big Daddy (Dennis Dugan, 1999) .

Whilst running wild at nursery and studying at my primary school, I grew a powerful bond with creative writing and art. I would often write my own fictional stories as well as painting and drawing the wacky imagery that would sprout into my mind when using my imagination to its maximum potential. These images were often what I like to categorise as "the weird and wonderful", as I would often create things that were considered 'outside of the box' and odd.

These are my greatest memories as there were no worries and I had all the time to explore my imagination!

My creativity expanded further throughout high school as I endured extra-cirricular GCSE courses in Fine Art, Media and Computing alongside my standard courses to express myself in as many imaginative ways as possible. I thoroughly enjoyed these subjects in school, particularly Fine Art as it drawing and painting as my favourite hobby at the time. It was also the first time utilising materials I had not previously worked with at home including oil pastel, watercolour and bleach techniques. I created many fascinating pieces in various subjects including natural forms, the human form and sealife. Feel free to browse these in my Early Arworks section!

Though undertaking these creative courses was joyous and expanded my experience and skills, it also became a big issue when trying to narrow my passion down to just four subjects when transitioning to college. After weeks on end discussing with my parents and peers to decide what would subjects would best suit, I  finally narrowed my pathways and chose Fine Art, Creative Writing, Film Studies and Applied Science.

After studying hard in school and achieving solid grades across the board in my exams, I obtained my place at my desired college at Wyke Sixth Form. My first year was a rollercoaster of unexpected emotions and experiences. I fell madly in love with Film Studies, exploring the historical and present contexts in film, the film indsutry and the practical elements actually making films. Creative Writing covered so many interesting topics such as poetry, script-writing, fictional and non-fictional storywriting which allowed so much freedom to be expressive. I even had a poem published in a competition winner book, be sure to check it out in the Creative Writing section on this website.

Sadly, Fine Art was a great struggle to pursue. There was a complete lack of creative freedom from having very set ways in developing pieces and having to adapt into styles I was not comfortable in such as material placement, cubism and large-scaled water painting. My teacher would tear up or bin our work up if it was not to his standard, which completely destroyed my confidence in this subject, I seriously struggled to finish Fine Art in my first year. Also, Applied Science had no benefit to my creative endurance. I simply chose this subject to better my average results I obtained in high school which had just lined to the same pass result.

Due to the intensity of second year, we were all required to narrow our subjects down to three subjects. Applied Science was an obvious discard, but I struggled to let go of Fine Art due to having such a passion in drawing and painting since I was a young age. However, after some thought on the sore restrictions and realising where my passions were developing into, I finally decided to let go and endure Film Studies and Creative writing.

This then left me in a state where I could only pursue two subjects, and the minimum required was three. However, due to my performance being so solid in Film Studies, my film teacher had suggested me ambitiously undertaking first and second year Media Studies. I had regretted not choosing Media Studies from the start of my college journey, so this was a great time to finally study it. I had agreed to take it on to which she spoke to the head of Media Studies about giving me a place to study first and second year Media Studies in my final year, he had accepted and everything fell into place.

My time at college really opened my eyes to a whole new world of the creative industries, what they entail and the different types of work I could pursue in teaching, practicality and writing. This final year flew by and I had the most incredible experiences learning more historical, theoretical and contextual aspects, working with a range of new applications such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premier Pro, Final Cut Pro X, Audacity, Blogger and lots of different filming equipment which overall gained me a fresh skillset.

In regards to my enjoyment for my Film Studies course... let me tell you all about it in the next chapter!

Chapter 2. Falling in Love with Film

As mentioned early on in Chapter 1, I have always really enjoyed watching films. Throughout my time at Wyke, I became more and more curious in the history of filmmaking, the theoretical, contextual side and the practical too. I fell in love with it!

To begin the first and second years, we would take a dive into analysing some of the greatest directors of the generations of filmmaking, looking at their theoretical, historical, technical, thematic, and narrative techniques. We initialised with taking a look at the 'coming of age' theme explored throughout Fish Tank (Andrea Arnold, 2009)  and Submarine (Richard Ayoade, 2010), to then later in the course studying technical masteries by the likes of Hitchcock with his long one-takes and zoom effects in Rear Window (1954) and Psycho (1960), alongside the historical innovation in film such as the influence Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1929)  has had on more modern science-fiction films such as Star Wars and Star Trek

I was truly fascinated, and this was just the start. I developed two portfolios and film two short horror-styled productions inspired by my chosen director of study over the first and second year where I was able to advance and translate my physical creativity digitally. Be sure to take a look at them in the Film section in my Creative Portfolio!

After obtaining my desired results at college, I was desperate to pursue film even further to take a step further towards a career in it. I took on a three-year Filmmaking Batchelor Honours degree at Leeds Beckett and commuted nearly every day to Leeds and back. I would wake up more often than not at six in the morning, get the bus by quarter past seven and be at Hull Paragon Interchange by half past eight for my train to Leeds. After a seven hour day, I would then return to Hull at nearly nine in the evening, so I would hardly see any daylight! This routine was super difficult to adjust to and tiring but I was determined to get the best grade possible.

About Me, Chapter 3. Now & Beyond

At The Northern Film School, I developed my knowledge on the film industry and professional film roles, improved my knowhow on high end film equipment such as the Arri Alexa and Sony Black Magic cameras, produced an array of short films and completed a ten-thousand-word dissertation. I graduated in 2020 with my desired result.

I now have over 6+ years of experience in film and have a strong passion to pursue an industry role in film directing and producing, displaying my my own unique style and ideas to inspire people all around the world.
